Tropical Storm the storm is projected to become a rare Category 5 storm as it shifts toward Jamaica, delivering dangerous flash flooding and landslides.

The hurricane, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been announced as the hurricane generates up to thirty inches of rain and storm surges as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth cyclone in the current Atlantic season, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

Category Five Storm Risk

A category five cyclone is the most powerful category, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

Although this storm is projected to diminish in strength to a fourth-level cyclone before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "minimal real distinction in the overall impacts" upon landfall, and that the cyclone will be "just as powerful" when it hits the country.

Urgent Readiness Measures

With tropical storm-strength wind and rainfall predicted to begin ahead of it moves across central Jamaica - including potentially the capital, Kingston - advisories emphasize that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"Several days of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall has started and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and many landslides," urged weather authorities.

The country's head of government the official stated: "I understand that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage worry and any nervousness and worry is to stay ready."

Residents are being told to protect their properties with sandbags and timber panels, and to gather basic necessities.

Wider Consequences

Warnings are also active for parts of Haiti including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Mudslides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Future Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to cross Cuba by midweek before moving through the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have reduced to a third-level cyclone.

Climate Connection

While it is challenging to link specific storms to global warming, scientists say it is resulting in meteorological events more prevalent and more intense.

Higher ocean heat generate more moisture in the air, aiding in the development of hurricanes.
