Countless individuals of colorfully attired Ethiopians assembled in the heart of Addis Ababa for the yearly Irreecha event this weekend.
The festival is honored by the Oromo, the biggest population group, and is held at the end of the nation's major monsoon period.
Annually, festival-goers gather around sacred natural water sources to give thanks to their higher powers for the fertile landscape that the rainy season have provided.
"I've been celebrating the festival for the past nine years," commented young adult a participant.
"For me, Irreecha symbolizes my identity, it reflects the dignity and importance of my ethnic group."
Men, ladies, the older generation and the younger generation all take part, ornamented in attention-grabbing clothes and jewellery.
They chant, move rhythmically, tell tales and deposit recently harvested foliage and flowers in liquid - representing existence, rebirth and hope.
International Attendance
This festival brings in individuals from throughout the country, visitors travel from internationally.
"I came last year - it was so good, so spectacular, I invited my children with me this year," mentioned an international guest, originating from Belfast in Northern Ireland.
"It is amazing. All people wants to say hello, all attendees offers affection and says welcome."
Celebration Schedule
The initial day of the festival occurred on the weekend in Addis Ababa. On Sunday, celebrants made their way to a provincial location, a settlement near the capital.
