'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': UK duo complete extraordinary voyage in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

One more day. One more day up and down the unforgiving ocean. A final stretch with aching hands clutching relentless paddles.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles across the ocean – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey across the Pacific that included close encounters with whales, defective signaling devices and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

Powerful 20-knot gusts approaching Cairns continuously drove their tiny rowboat, their boat Velocity, off course from land that was now frustratingly within reach.

Loved ones gathered on land as an expected noon touchdown became 2pm, followed by 4pm, then dusk. Finally, at 6.42pm, they came alongside the Cairns sailing club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe expressed, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We drifted outside the navigational path and thought we might have to swim to shore. To at last reach our destination, following years of planning, seems absolutely amazing."

The Monumental Voyage Commences

The UK duo – aged 28 and 25 respectively – departed from Lima, Peru in early May (an earlier April effort was stopped by equipment malfunction).

During 165 ocean days, they averaged 50 nautical miles a day, paddling together in daylight, single rower overnight while her teammate dozed minimal sleep in a cramped cabin.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Kept alive with 400kg of mostly freeze-dried food, a seawater purification system and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the duo depended upon an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for limited energy demands.

During most of their voyage through the expansive ocean, they've had no navigation equipment or beacon, creating a phantom vessel scenario, nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The women endured 30-foot swells, traversed marine highways and weathered furious gales that, on occasion, silenced all of their electronics.

Groundbreaking Success

Yet they continued paddling, stroke by relentless stroke, across blazing hot days, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the first all-female pair to paddle over the South Pacific, without breaks or external assistance.

Additionally they collected more than £86,000 (Australian $179,000) supporting Outward Bound.

Existence Onboard

The pair did their best to stay connected with society beyond their small boat.

During the 140s of their journey, they reported a "chocolate emergency" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with over 1,000 miles remaining – but granted themselves the pleasure of opening one bar to celebrate England's Red Roses winning the Rugby World Cup.

Personal Insights

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 achieving record pace.

She has now mastered another ocean. However there were instances, she admitted, when they doubted their success. Beginning on the sixth day, a path over the planet's biggest sea felt impossible.

"Our power was dropping, the desalination tubes ruptured, but after nine repairs, we accomplished a workaround and barely maintained progress with minimal electricity for the rest of the crossing. Whenever issues arose, we merely made eye contact and went, 'naturally it happened!' Still we persevered."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we addressed challenges collectively, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she said.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she rowed the Atlantic, trekked England's coastal trail, climbed Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. Further adventures likely await.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're already excited to plan new adventures together as well. No other partner would have sufficed."
