On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
