Security Council representatives gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit the following week.

He became transitional president following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending 13 years of civil war.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of global extremist entities in July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened for the first time in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the region.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting is not the president's debut journey to America during this period. This past fall, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
